Although I have been painting for over thirty years, it wasn't until the spring of 2006 that I ever painted a dog or even imagined I would.

My dog, Popeye, was being naughty and I caught him red-handed with the camera. the result was a picture of him looking quite regal. Posed unaware, he had the evidence of his mischief stuck to his lips. somehow I felt it needed to be a painting. Paint and dogs made an obvious combination.

Most of these are relatively small paintings, using glasses, cups, plates and patterns. I am not interested in making pretty still-life's or vignettes, but rather gathering slices and glimpses of these items to play with light, color, layers, reflections and distortions.

The surface of the painting is important. I love paint, juicy and sensuous. The stroke, the mark itself must be direct and clear. There is an honesty in that.
